Fall steelheading on the Klamath and Trinity Rivers seems to bring out the best in morons. What amazes me is how little respect some people have for other anglers. I have seen it all this season from boats floating right through the middle of runs being fished by anglers, to anglers getting low holed left and right. A lot of people want to give gear fisherman a hard time about this kind of stuff but it seems to be fly anglers that are the worst. If you don’t know the rules of steelhead etiquette, here’s my take on it.
- If there is a vehicle and angler(s) in a pullout or run, go find another one. Let these people fish!
- Work your way down a run and don’t stand in one spot for hours on end. If you get a grab or hook a fish then maybe go through again but give other anglers a chance. Nobody owns a run or the river.
- If you feel the need to fish a run that another angler is in, ask if you can fish behind that person. You should never cut in and fish below them or even attempt to ask. The nerve that people even ask to fish below another angler is rude.
- If you are in a boat, please row to the inside of a run or behind anglers if possible. It is not a bad idea to ask the angler where they want you to row. Let them know that you are trying to stay off their water and be courteous. If you have to walk the boat around the anglers.
Just my 2 cents and hopefully some will learn from this. If you don’t, well may the steelhead gods kick your ass all season!
